House of the day: 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

It’s Inauguration day and at Design Lines we’re celebrating the start of something new!

I rang in 2009 by painting my bedroom a new color, Stephanie & Lauren purchased headboards, and Judy hung some new art in her Master Bedroom. Why not consider some fresh new lighting for your space or fun throw pillows for the sofa or a new nightstand in the bedroom? Art for the foyer?

This week Domino magazine released the exclusive story of the Obamas‘ selection of California-based designer Michael Smith as White House Decorator. Click here for the details, we believe the final design will have an impact on almost all American households.
Be sure to take this fun white house poll (in honor of the rare white flurries outside) and decide which administration you think did it best!

Also, don’t miss Nick Olsen’s blog for some intriguing close-up images & discussion of White House interiors. My favorite? Jackie Kennedy’s interpretation of the West Sitting Hall, below:

Happy Inauguration day to you, too!

A New Look…..

Well you think someone has thought of it all until you find something that just blows your mind. Well this is the most genius idea I have ever seen. Coming from someone that owns two dogs, one being 65 pounds and one being 15 pounds, and a cat, I would love for Santa to bring me this.

This is a nightstand with a built-in dog crate. Genius!

And the great thing is you don’t even have to use it as a nightstand, next to your bed. You could put it in the corner of your office or living room, it looks a lot better than the Wal Mart metal crate. Why not use it as an end table next to the sofa. Your friends will not notice, well maybe when weird noises start coming from it.
The best site I found was http://www.denhaus.com/. It will run you about $525.00 but what a great concept and you would spend that much on a nightstand or end table.

You can even go contemporary! This red one comes in three other colors too.

Form & Function Tuesday

The sights of snow flurries in the air today got me thinking about the Myrtle Beach Vacation I took last month. I love how the picture above looks iconic in a 1960s Myrtle Way.

I love the content of these next shots: the weathered wood of the pier paired with the color of the ocean on a windy day was a restful color scheme and the truly functional form of these stools (these are used by some local Fishermen) were beautiful to me.

Local Design

HAVEN

Looking for a great local shop in the heart of Raleigh–Check out Haven off of Lassiter at North Hills Avenue. 919-881-2440

They have everything from monogrammed hand towels, chic lighting, neat home decor and possibly the best hand lotion ever made.

If you have ever been to our studio you will see us, especially in the winter time running to lather up in Olivina.

It is a delightful smell sure to put anyone in a great mood! Not to mention it leaves your skin so smooth.

A tribute to Mr. Columbus

I had nearly forgotten that today was Christopher Columbus Day until I got an email blast from Pottery Barn reminding me to check out their sales. In anticipation of the Pear Square Event & Sale (We’re all so excited at Design Lines), I thought I’d pull together a couple of items for sale inspired by & in honor of Christopher Columbus.

We have a pair of these beautiful pierced wooden mirrors, 40″ in diameter

We have quite a few pieces of framed art with nautical & map themes. I’d pair the one above with anything cobalt & some black & white photography to make it less serious.

These wood sculptures on stands are great as abstract pieces of art, I love the rescued shipwrecked vibe.

I pulled this image from our portfolio as the most worthy of Christopher Columbus. It’s a snapshot of a study we just completed at Lake Gaston. I adore the interest that the convex mirror added to the space (thank you Restoration).

Happy Columbus Day to all!

I adore OLY Studio.

This postcard from OLY Studio came in the mail today with the rest of the High Point Fall Furniture Market teasers. They are really piling in now, we keep them in a beautiful porcelain container on the transaction counter near Laurie’s desk and peek at them during lunch (see photo below) The styling of the postcard caught my eye, but let’s be honest, so does anything from OLY. Their collections are eclectic & clean, with some pieces looking very Hollywood Regency and others looking rustic and earthy with hand hewn qualities.
For instance:
I just specified the Elisabeth Buffet for a client’s Dining Room. I love the details on this piece.

The pieces below will be at our first ever sale- The Pear Square Event the first week in November. (You can call the studio if you’re interested in them, now though)

The Christine Cocktail Table would look so great with piles of big books underneath it.

A pair of Bella sonces could break up a photo arrangement in a gallery hallway.

This, albeit, huge, is the. perfect. mirror.

I would hang it on a wall in my bedroom & tape just a few b & w photos on it a la The Diving Bell & The Butterfly (which I also love) to make it a little less stuffy.

Olympics Inspiration

There’s a bit of sadness at Design Lines today. Perhaps its because the 17 day party of the Olympics is now gone and we’ll have to wait another 4 years to be OBSESSED with the games.

All of us found it hard to get some sleep the last two weeks but we couldn’t help but stay up way past the decent hours of the night to catch a glimpse of the awesome moments. Some of the DLL highlights include:

The sensational Opening Ceremonies

Amazing Gymnastics (who else adores Bela Karolyi?)

Michael Phelps (of course)

Discovering new Olympic sports (Trampolining, anyone?)

Beach Volleyball

The list goes on….

I think it’s safe to agree that the USA represented plenty of Gold, Silver, & Bronze. Perhaps we should consider Swiss architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron for a Gold medal in design for the beautiful architecture that is the center of the Olympics: The Birds Nest. Read more about it here:

Tragic that the Olympics are over, but at least we can all drown our sorrows in these gorgeously Asian-inspired fabrics from F. Schumacher & Co:

Shiroko Silk Velvet in Bronze

Chinois Fret in Cinnabar / Gold

My absolute favortie right now, Chiang Mai Dragon in Aquamarine.

New Favorite!

I have so many favorite things. It’s during the summer months in particular though that I get a little carried away– think of Julie Andrews as Maria from the Sound of Music (which by the way is an old favorite) .

Summertime Favorites (what I like to call “The Classics”) :
1- Roadtrips
Two weeks ago the Biltmore: (I’ll be sure to post more pictures of this, soon)

& Fearrington Village last weekend, check out the famous “Belties” below:

2- Anything with fresh Strawberries, like this delectable strawberry rhubarb pie recipe I adore.

I especially love the pick your own berries from Creedmoore’s Lyon’s Farm.

3- & of course, fireworks

As far as new favorites go… my new favorite furniture line is Bradley Hughes. Based in glittering Atlanta, the exclusive furniture line is all about beautiful shapes that I continue to be drawn to.

Below: A photo of Judy with Bradley-Hughes’ Michelle Bradley at the High Point Furniture Market in April.

My Top 4 Reasons to love Bradley-Hughes:

1– The Lily Chairs, pretty as a picture by themselves (although I think they are stronger as a pair). Judy used a pair of the Lily chairs in the ASID Showhouse

2– The Marie ottomans. I can’t wait to put these in a client’s guest bedroom at the end of the bed. Never before has an ottoman looked so welcoming to me.3- H. Pierce Wallcoverings, exuding warm, lived-in texture. I recently specified this product in the Ginger Root Colorway for a wallcovering in a metropolitan master suite.4- Someday, I’ll own the Lucille Hand Forged Iron Chandelier for myself. Beauty!
Hey Design Lines Ladies, what are your favorite things?

Color of the day: Green!

I’ve always had a fondness for our dear Mother Nature, our Planet Earth. As of late though, i’ve become accutely aware of the sizeable impact my existence has on her. This awareness has been slowly mounting, mostly from local drought warnings, the American Society of Interior Designers’ sustainable views with which Design Lines is closely aligned, as well as my love for the community of Carrboro and the following blog: www.treehugger.com/ . However, the topic was pushed to the front of my mind after viewing an Oprah on Going Green.

During the show, Oprah discussed the importance of making environmentally responsible life changes. Which prompted me to do the same. My first step? Buying this intriguing guide:

The Green Book, by authors Elizabeth Rogers and Thomas Kostigen discusses interesting facts about waste, recycling, and simple solutions we all can implement in our lives. See the following excerpt:

“Use fewer paper napkins-everywhere. There’s no need to grab a huge stack of napkins from the concession stand when you know you’ll use only one or two. Each American consumes an average of 2, 200 standard two-ply napkins per year, or the equivalent of just over 6 of these napkins per day. If everyone in the United States used an average of 1 fewer napkin per day, more than a billion pounds of napkins could be saved from landfills each year. A stack of napkins this size could fill the entire Empire State Building”

I decided to challenge a few members of the Design Lines team to join me in accepting a green resolution for the new year. This is what we got:

Brittany’s (that’s me) green resolves:

1-Use less napkins

2- There’s an interesting view point which suggests the utilization of existing furniture as an alternative to subjecting the earth to the waste, fuel, and energy, involved to produce all new furniture. Say…there’s nothing more I love than antiques.

3-Bring my own bag to the grocery store for small trips as an alternative to the paper or plastic options.

My usual decision:

vs. my favorite alternative to paper or plastic. This is the Bag by designer Anya Hindmarch I’ve had my eye on since mid-summer:

Laurie ‘s green:
“I will eliminate duplicate mail order catalogs that are sent to my home and the office!
So many trees are used for mail order catalogs that just end of in the trash and our landfills. ”

Click here to see how Laurie could implement this solution in her life.

Designer Ashley Lane commits to utilize one green product in all of her designs. She plans on acheiving this goal by searching for locally made materials, or materials that are manufactured using environmentally responsible methods. Ie: http://kravetgreen.com/ Ashley could also recommend energy-saving lighting to her clients.

Lauren, our intern, commits to turning off the water while brushing her teeth. According to the Green Book, turning off the tap while brushing could save up to five gallons of water a day!

Hopefully, our small goals may have an effect on the Earth, and if not on the Earth, on us and our increased efforts to be aware of our commitment to sustainability.

I shot the picture above on a summer trip home to central Illinois.

I love this tree on Duke’s campus

What I call the “forest”, a view from inside the Design Lines lounge (this is where we eat lunch everyday), a truly uplifting space.

The end.
