Current Projects: Reimagining A Whole House – Part 1

A young Cary family was looking to freshen up their entire house.  Judy and I surveyed the whole space and compiled a list of changes at the beginning of last year.  Over time the clients & I have made the changes and the whole house looks & feels very different. We began with changing paint colors throughout the house. Next:  The formal living room made the top of the list as it is the first thing you see when you walk in the front door.

Before, the clients never spent time in the living room. Too many pieces & a confining space plan made the smallish room uninviting and artificial flowers looked stagnant.

Living Room Before

We said farewell to the Golden Girls vibe and hello to a space where they could entertain, read a book, or play the piano. Original & interesting encaustic paintings hang in the space and the pretty curvalinear lines of the piano now invite a player to sit down to a sonata.

Check back later in the week to see other parts of the house, reimagined. What room would you makeover if you had the chance?

A Furniture Makeover for your Monday

Remember a few weeks ago when I posted about these fabulous knobs from Anthropologie?  We had a local artist, the talented Jamie Goffman, paint our client’s existing furniture-from an ordinary stained maple bed and nightstands to a fun red bed with cream nightstands- to make quite the cute transformation. This makeover has inspired me to consider painting other pieces of furniture.

Current Projects: This Olde Farmhouse Update

Interior Design of Farmhouse Raleigh NC Design Lines

Time for an update! Back in November of 2008 Ashley started this olde farmhouse project. The overall concept was to use all the existing material from the original house which dates back to the 1800’s. There are only two new additions to the house; the hardwood floors in the master bedroom and the two exterior dutch doors that were built by the contractor.

The front door view above shows a large stone step which was part of the original foundation of the house. We still are missing shutters, a swing, a few good rocking chairs, and the screens for the back porch. I can totally see myself moving in tomorrow!

Exterior hardware is also not shown yet.

The interior kitchen area is still under construction, we are missing the doors to the cabinets. The overall aesthetic feel of the farmhouse style is best shown through the Rohl faucet, Rohls cast iron farmhouse sink, Venetian Calcutta marble from Rockin’teriors, and the Walker Zanger hand-glazed tiles.

The master bath, will take on an old rustic feel with the original fireplace, mirror, and walls.

Above are some of the details of this olde farmhouse; the latch on the dutch doors, horizontal wood panels in the master bedroom, and the ceiling detail in the living room. This reclaimed farmhouse has come a long way and has a little bit longer to go. But look for more the 1st week of September after our furniture install, completion of cabinets and final touches are complete. To see previous updates from the project click on the dates, July 9th 2009 and August 20, 2009.

Current Project: A Before & After of a Living Room

Raleigh Interior Design Design Lines copy

The client’s living room before had a traditional cluttered feeling. Our client wanted a more sophisticated room for entertaining but wanted to keep her existing area rug.

Judy and Ashley worked around the client’s existing area rug to create a calming yet elegant living room, which included solid neutral tones. The pop of color in the room came from the accent color in the area rug. The two contemporary wing chairs, which came from Lillian Augustallowed guests to sit comfortably while conversing. The two upholstered cotton linen blended sofas are from Lee Industries.

This Lillian August coffee table is accented with a separate mirrored tray top which allows for versatility.

While two story windows are dramatic and allow for a lot of natural light, the client wanted to ability to have privacy at night. We decided these designer roller shades from Hunter Douglas were the perfect element because they did not take away from the rooms’ design.

This was our client’s first custom furniture experience and loves the thought of entertaining now that her living room is beautiful.

The dining room is still in progress, so stay tuned. The transformation is incredible!!

Ashley went on an installation yesterday and wanted to share with you the pieces she installed. In the first picture the little gold accented table is nestled perfectly adjacent to the nail-head velvet chair.

We did an antique cream finish on the exterior of this Celo Bar from Hickory Chair and a weathered gray finish on the inside of the cabinet. This is a great piece for serving cocktails and hosting a party. But wonderful to close up and use for storage day to day. A very functional piece!

Finally, we put a new chandelier in the master bedroom to add some excitement and light; a wonderful way to add the WOW factor for little money. The light is from Currey and Company.

Green means go: Check out these knobs!

Later this week we’ll see the efforts of a big before and after on some furniture we had painted. Our clients, wanted to convert their existing guest suite furniture into colorful kid friendly pieces appropriate for their sons “big boy” room. Using a transporation concept as our guide- we selected the finishes, a fabulously fast red for the bed and some cream for the nightstands to grow with. For the nightstands, we purchased these fun checkered knobs from anthropologie. So excited to see the finished product and an inexpensive furniture makeover!

Design Challenge: Creating a functional office for a military couple in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Before the room was bare and the walls were painted in a boring builder beige.

Ashley and Brittany took on this challenge to create a peaceful place to work in a palette of  pale blues, chocolates, and grays. Polished nickel accents on the lamp, fan, and nail head trim along with a mirrored top gourd table infuses this space with a modern twist.

Ashley and our client’s favorite part of the room, are these oh so comfortable chairs from Lillian August, while Brittany’s favorite piece of the room is this large format artwork from Soicher Marin.

Keep in mind that our design solutions are not bound by the Triangle. We enjoyed designing livable solutions for this couple from Fayetteville and we only hope they get to spend plenty of time in this home office before their next tour abroad.

Current Projects: Bald Head, Island

Bald Head Island Logo

Often times, client projects will take us outside the Wake County lines. Judy and Ashley are working on a second home on Bald Head, Island, which is the “confluence of the Cape Fear River and Atlantic Ocean.”  The only way to this island is by ferry. Currently, the project is still in the construction phase; however, by the end of summer we should be installing the furniture throughout the house.  Shades of blues and turquoises give the family a true coastal retreat. We can’t wait to show you pictures of the house and our documentation of the installations. We will keep you posted!!

Current Projects: Sitting Area in Master Bedroom

Design Lines, LTd. Design Raleigh 2

Ashley has been working with a client for a few years now and these two shots are of the sitting area in their master bedroom.

The two contemporary wing chairs are one of their most comfortable in the Lee Industries line and they just came out with this same chair in a glider.  The glider version could be perfect for a nursery.

The floor length mirror allows an extra dimension in the room.  Not only is it great to get ready but becomes its own piece of furniture and accents on the furniture that sits in front of it.

The decorative bench at the end of the bed allows for another patterned fabric and another shade of blue.  The fabric is from Lee Industries.

Design Lines, Ltd. Design Raleigh

The decorative ottoman, also from Lee Industries, is a nice accent piece that brought another shade of blue into the room and allowed the client to relax and read a book with their feet put up.

Stay tuned, there is more to come in this master bedroom!

A bedroom fit for the lady of the house. The combination of the chandelier and bed frame gives this room so much character. The mercury lamps on either side of the bed, were actually created from vases. Judy wanted to use these somewhere in the room and took the vases to Thompson Lynch in Cameron Village and made them into lamps.

What a clever idea!
